Hickory Island is 1/4 mile across and is located in Lake Erie.
I lived there from kindergarten to age 21 (except for the time spent at University
of Michigan). Our house faced due south towards a lighthouse five miles out. We
had the lake as our front yard. We could see Canada across an expanse of about
3 miles on the left of our view and Michigan slightly further away on the
right. About 45 degrees of our horizon was unobstructed Lake Erie. As beautiful
to look at as it was, it has been and still is today a very nasty body of water due
to human stupidity. Even still we swam, fished and boated in it with careless
abandon all summer and in winter the icebergs were tremendous fun to pole
around on. The water memories of that place are deep in my psyche. I still
long for water on the horizon. |
