What amazing fun it was to send my cryptic signals into the ether
and hear a reply from parts unknown. To a twelve year old in 1959 it was
just about the best thing that happened in my life to that time.
My QSL cards were proudly displayed on the wall and I felt on top
of the electronic world.
It was very rewarding to have my father
become a NOVICE at the exact same time. Even though his call was
KN8KCY and not right next to mine, it gave each of us a unique identity.
I spent many an hour with hard metal headphones on listening to Morse
code winging its way through the planetary energy grid.
I did become a technician - K8KBP - for a few years in high school but
I let my license expire due to a change in interest - girls.
I still have a short wave radio and from time to time listen to the
world - thank you Chuck Harder and your $29.95 wonder. And let us not
forget good ole Nickie the Tess ( link on tower above and web ring below) for being the real
master of oscillation ...
