What can be said of one's first jump out of the "home nest"? The
University of Michigan in Ann Arbor was quite a leap for a wet
behind the ears, middle of the road - wide eyed virgin !
It only took that beatnik/hippy filled "center for HIGHER learning"
three years to help me to drop out, grow a beard and start wearing
sandals. I can't blame U of M for any kind of change of life path
because my home and family were in a state of turmoil at the time
but I sure came into contact with the fringe element of society for
the first time in my life and I felt strangely in tune with them.
I did get a good grounding in engineering basics including calculus,
physics and chemistry which have helped me in understanding the
world I live in but it also showed me that the universe is far more
mysterious than I ever imagined. I only just began to doubt the
main stream media and its form of truth due to the people and
chemicals ingested during my "experimental phase" of education.
I have no regrets of any actions taken during those years and must
admit that what I hear today as truth concerning certain substances
is in direct contradiction to my own experiences. It is one more
indication that those who hold the reins of power have a horribly
distorted sense of reality and are directing society in absurd
ways. I suppose the "HIGH POINT" at U of M really had nothing to do
with the university but was a lecture by a visiting professor ...
Dr. Timothy Leary. Yes indeed Timothy Leary told me to take LSD and
leave society so that when I returned I could help make it a better
place to live in. His words were very compelling and his message
was one of positive social change then and throughout the rest of
his life. He has passed through the realm of material now and truely
is "ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN" ... thank you Moody Blues. |
